Affordable Healthcare Series- Phosphorus

PHOSPHORUS

Phosphorus is a mineral with a health benefit to the body that is vast.  Phosphorus is right behind calcium in maintaining healthy bone formation and integrity.  It assists in the conversion of food into energy and plays a vital role in our metabolism.  Phosphorus helps with digestion, protein formation, hormonal balance, optimize chemical reactions in cellular repair, and proper nutrient utilization in the body's tissues.  It is an essential nutrient for growth and development, especially in children.  It is a required element for making ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule which provides energy to our cells.  A deficiency of phosphorus may have symptoms of weak, fragile bones, moderate discomfort in various body joints, as well as a decrease in overall stamina.  Research has also shown a possible link to anemia and a weak immune system.  The recommended daily value or DRI for adults is around 700 milligrams, but don’t over-do it!  The safest sources of phosphorus are in the naturally grown foods you’re about to take on!  Too much phosphorus can erode your skeletal integrity by pulling calcium from the bone and letting into the blood stream as a reaction to the excessive levels.  Speak with your medical professional before making any drastic changes!  Keep the balance.   Most legumes are great natural sources and the list below will help you reach your DRI by consuming a cup of any, daily.  Grow these:

Lentils 198g, 36% DRI per cup

Pumpkin Seeds 129g, 159% DRI per cup

Non-GMO Soybeans (Edamame) 18% DRI per ounce

Honorable mentions:  Oats (breakfast) 95 milligrams per cup, and Mushrooms (shiitake) 294mg per ¾ cup!

Bottom Line- Happy Bones, teeth, digestion, and metabolism.
